I want to make a custom live cd

I've looked at a few customizers and they seem to be done on the command line (to hard). Can you just do it backwards and load a distro then pull off what you don't need or are the applications supported by many sub support programs that wouldn't come off by just pulling the aplication.. I want to be able to do it on the live cd but I want it to be able to install it on my hard drive when I'm done customizing.

See SuseStudio.com for a menu driven method. When complete and tested the final choice offers a number of ways to create media for install.
