DHCP = "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol" A really fancy way of saying that a client--eg your PC--goes to a host--eg your router--to get an IP assigned.

Google = How to get basic answers faster and more completely than anything in a forum.

Wikipedia is supremely excellent for info like this. There is extreme detail on a variety of protocols, standards and technology. The links on the DHCP page alone probably provide an excellent background on networking technologies.
