First of all, welcome to LQ and to linux world in general. :)

Hope you know what a linux distribution (or 'distro' for short) is. Some of the distros are: Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware, Fedora, Mandriva... You will always have a download link in any of the distros' website.

If you have good bandwidth download the cd/dvd images. But preferrably purchase them from online shops or better from the distribution's webstore itself. That way you will be contributing to a good cause.

Some online stores are
1) www.osdisc.com
2) www.linuxcd.org
3) www.rainbowcomputech.com (if you are from India or the subcontinent)

As you are new to Linux, I'd recommend Ubuntu Linux. It's easy to get productive with it. Get it from their website: http://ubuntu.com

Hi,

Welcome to LQ and hopefully GNU/Linux. :)

I would suggest that you look at test driving with a LiveCD from 'The LiveCD List'. That way you can see what feels right for you.

The above link and others available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!
