I want to build a computer for linux, probably suse or mandrake.
I've never had much luck with linux on previous comptuers. Often it's video problems with xfree I think cause of integrated chipsets sis and mediagx anyway, thats not important. What is important is me selecting the proper components for a good linux machine. I will want it also to dual boot win98 and maybe dos 6.1 or something.

I want AMD. either Duron or k6, probably duron.
And I need advice. I have read all over the net about motherboard for linux and now I am so confused, I think maybe I shouldn't build a computer this year, maybe I should concentrate on my tropical fish.

For an AMD Duron, is the AD11 a good board for linux? I have read that AMD761 is a good chipset, and that kt133 is a bad chipset for linux. I need suggestions, no what I need is a list of rock solid Duron/athelon motherboards for use with linux. And advise on a case as apparently these duron motherboards have tight power requirements? I can't just use any case apperntly. Oh and then, perhaps someone could tell me a good cheap reliable vendor who has all that stuff that I need but don't know what it is yet.

Yes, I've read the build a cheap linux box faq, it fires my imagination and makes me want to begin, but it confuses me, there is so little info about socket a chipsets. I would use a socket 7 board and a k6 but those boards are almost as expensive as the duron motherboards.

Oh, did I mention I need to bring this all in for under $500?

I need a knowledgable friend. I know my request sounds pushy, but please help.

i don't ever have any problems with Tyan boards. I use voodoo cards with no problem and most ATI video cards have no problems. best thing to do is check out a distro of your choice hardware compatibility lists to get a good idea of what works best and what doesn't. most of the time its always some problem with the video cards, so if you pick one suitable for linux, most everything else will work okay, and depending on your internet connection, always stay away from winmodems.
for sound, i would go with creative labs soundblaster, almost always works.

good luck in finding what is suitable for you as well....
