I used to know how to add/modify custom CUPS interface files - not now!

Hi,

I have at home a RED Linux ES server (2.6.9-42.EL). I just picked up from work a HP 5550dtn printer (very nice).

I added the printer to linux via system-config-printer (CUPS). But I want to be able to make use of an interface file to manipulate text printing (i.e. portrait, 17cpi font, etc, etc).

Problem is, I forgot how to do this and I can't find anything online to help.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Greg.

Are you thinking of a2ps by chance? Or the command line arguments to lp (lpr)? And when you configured the printer was there a menu choice for it or did you install using the PPD file(s) from the printer CD-ROM (H-P usually is pretty darned good about providing "drivers" for printers used in UNIX/Linux systems). Only mention that so you'll have the full features available.

HI,

Where I'm going is:

1) I installed the printer via system-config-printers. The HP printer 5550 driver was listed. It works a treat for most things, but when I send raw text, e.g. echo "TEST" | lp -d hp5550, the font pitch is 10 (I want 17) and orientation is portrait (I want landscape). Years ago(pre cups I think??), I remember when I would add a printer and then their would be an interface file of the same name which could be easily edited to change these sort of settings for raw text printing.

I also think its possible to use interfaces file (e.g. /etc/cups/interfaces/[printer]) for cups printers - but I dont know to do it??

Any ideas?

Have you tried the lp options? For example,
Code:
lp -d hp5550 -o landscape -o cpi=17 -o lpi=4
Also, if you just pipe a text file through a2ps does that work (a2ps does two "pages" on one sheet in landscape by default).

Also, you might want to look at http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...P-DeskJet_5550
