i suppose thats weird according to my network classes hehehe ..
if ur ISP change ur ip .. as its dhcp as most of ISP's are .. then i dunno u will have different ip and hence /etc/hosts entry wont exist
wot did u put in /etc/hosts ...wot entry ? ip given by ISP to u ? again its network thing ..
are u sure ur ISP give only dynamic IP .. coz it might be possible u have a static ip .. does ur ip change on every connect to internet .. or maybe after every boot ?
if it doesnt .. its probably static .. and then it was wise thing to do ..
I AM MAJORLY CONFUSED .... heh sorry .. cudnt help u much ...

i dont know how u managed to get it work but if again some problem creeps in of simmilar sort then this might help

route add default gw 12.183.101.1 dev eth1

i think this shud work .. as for the first time we saw some difference ... i told u its a route problem ... but u happened to use route command very late... so good if u got this working .. but if u land again in this problem .. then try this .. n if this also dont work .. just modify the first entry a lil

route add -net 12.183.102.0 dev eth1
route add default gw 12.183.101.1 dev eth1

i dont know .. ur network is strange for me ... so hehe dont mess it up .... but if u land in problem .. this have good chances of helping u !!

ohh okk now i understand ... ur genmask is 255.255.254.0
okkk ... koool its clear for me now ... ur route entries are good .. so u just might want to add this stuff in route .. if later something happens
i mena the entry with default gateway
thnks i learnt good stuff
ur route entries are good .. 255.255.254.0 does the trick
