I own the directory but why do I have no access to it

I have installed an application as root in location /usr/local/share/app1/
After installation I realized my user user1 has no access to it. So I created a group myGroup and add user1 to it.
Then I change the directory's owner to myGroup/user1

Right now when I do ls I am seeing

sudo ls -la /usr/local/share

drwxr-xr-x 3 user1 myGroup 4096 Jan 29 16:34 app1

Every single file in the app folder seem to be owned by myGroup/user1 as well. However, if I just ls as user1 I am seeing

ls -la /usr/local/share/app1

ls: cannot access /usr/local/share/app1: Permission denied

Why is this? Anyone has some idea?

Does that user have execute permission (at least) in all of the parent directories?

(Time lag -- sorry)

the user don't have permission to local and share. That seems to be the problem. Fixed
