see the SUSE lifetime documentation
http://en.opensuse.org/Lifetime

OpenSUSE 11.4 is DEAD
OpenSUSE 12.1 is DEAD
Opensuse 12.2 IS DEAD

install a supported version

OpenSUSE 12.3 has only about 140 days of support left
and Opensuse 13.1 is the current

you will NOT be able to install netbeans8 or jdk8 on the java6 11.4

install 13.1
and read the novell suse wiki
OpenJDK is already installed
if you want to switch off the Opensource "openJDK" to Oracles JAVA you need to cahngs the system DEFAULT

it is there rebuild and rebrand of RHEL6.5

it might be "free" but you really DO need to buy a support contract

The OP is just learning I assumed. I think Oracle just had me make an account. Only needed to buy the support if I wanted to run in production and get updates. Really can get past that too.

Your position on start with updated OS is good and I assume the OP's request is for current apps.
