RTCW Return to castle wolfestein is a very good game, runs great on my RH7.2 system. The full version is a little pricy $50 , but you can download a nice demo either mutiplayer or single player. Large servers with up to 64 people playing.

the RTCW demo is very easy to install. it comes as a .run file. As root just type ./filename.run and follow instructions. If you do it in xwindows it has a nice gui installer, If you do it in no xwindows, it has prompts that are easy to understand. Its almost as easy as a rpm install.
On the games front especially, I would check out: transgaming.com . Great support (IMHO) for running win games (and apps).
The business model is interesting...the user-base decides via a voting system what products or issues the company will work on. It costs $5 per month to join/vote and get your hands on winex (the linux app that allows you to run the win programs). They've also tackled their first DirectX 8 title, Max Payne (still a work in progress).
As far as apps goes, well ... depends on what you're into.
