I need help getting to a conole or a "super user"

Ok im trying to install ati drivers on open suse 10.2. i looked at the wiki page at novell and was like >.> wtf. so i began searching for a concole looking thing i could type into, i was expecting it to look like an old ms dos box. anyways i tell the thing to open with ash, cause it said on the wiki page that it was a shell thing. so i did and i got a pop up said in needed to be a super user. so now im like....hmmmm. so if anyone knows where i can find a complete idiots guide to installing ati drivers or how to use a conole, better yet how to open the console thing plz let me know. i hate not knowing >.> thanks in advance for any help rendered unto me and my small plight

a console (conole? concole??) is generally interchangably called a terminal. it'll be in the desktop menus somewhere, gnome-terminal, konsole, rxvt, xterm, eterm or one of many others. you'd become superuser by running "su -" and entering the root password.

I don't have any ATI graphics cards, but if the installation program is similar to NVidias, you may need to shutdown the graphics system before installing.

You can run it from one of the psuedo terminals. Press [CTRL]-ALT-F1 or [CTRL]-ALT-F2 or ... [CTRL]-ALT-F6. Since you need to be root to shut down the x server, you can simply log in as root.
The command "init 3" will switch to the nongraphical mode. ( Note, this is for SuSE and many other distro's; some like slackware or debian may use a different run level #).

I'm going to try and take it easy but I think the first thing I would do is find a friend (reach by phone) close that has some knowledge of linux or find an easy step by step book. I'm not sure if there is a "Linux for Dummies" or not and this is not trying to hurt your feelings.
