You dont need to do that, the
make menuconfig script does that for you...

wget [your kernel from www.kernel.org]
tar -xjvf [ file]
cd [folder where it all resides]
make menuconfig
(do some tweaks, mostly you dont need to tweak much)
make all
sudo make install
reboot into the new kernel

Have losta coffee around during the make all, it could (will) take some time...
