I may have screwed the pooch...help please

Downloaded Fedora 9 on 6 .iso disks, all went well. Went through the setup and figured I wanted the most bang I could get since I will be using this as a server and play a bit with the desktop to maybe get rid of Windows on my main computer, so checked ALL load options. After the dinosaur computer took 3 1/2 hours to load Fedora, everything seems to boot up. Get [OK] across the board on all start ups. Then, in an MSDOS style screen it get:
Fedora release 9 (sulphur)
Kernel 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 on an i686 (tty1)

Server login: <user>
Password: <password>
[root@server ~]# <------WHAT DO I PUT HERE???

And this is where I am lost. I have read tutorial after tutorial, forum after forum and nowhere can I find what I am supposed to input here to get ahead. If anyone has a suggestion/link/boot for my a$$/anything that will help, I would greatly appreciate it.

try 'startx'

Sounds like you didn't ask for a GUI to be installed. One way to check is, after you login, use the cmd

startx

which should start X-windows, which will bring up your GUI if you have one.
Try that and let us know what happens

A little background information, perhaps... (You've done enough installing for one day, eh?)

"The Windows that you know and love" ;) is a tightly-coupled architecture. Everything fits and works very closely with everything else, and you can't separate things easily; nor are you given much opportunity to omit things. It is, to be sure, a very carefully thought out "one choice," but there's only one way.

Linux, on the other hand, is a (very) loosely-coupled system. In other words, it's piecemeal. The various pieces fit together very well indeed, but you have many choices ... you can include things or omit them; you can choose between many alternatives. You have a cornucopia of choices where Windows gives you none at all.

This would be a great time to grab a loose-leaf notebook and start keeping a diary. When you have a question, write it down in the notebook, leave space for the answer, and then, "let it go" for now. You're going to have way too many questions, way too many unfamiliar things, to be able to "chase them all." So, write 'em down (I prefer longhand, in pencil) and let 'em go.

And, uhh, pet the poor pooch. Dog food would be nice. ;)

Fedora should install the GUI and boot to it by default. If you didn't explicitly ask it not to (or you may have asked for a server install which could possibly have the same effect but I would doubt it), then it is likely that your install didn't actually go all that well.

Id you could show us the output of the command

grep id: /etc/inittab

that may help us
