midnight commander can navigate through remote shares (ftp, samba, ssh).

Konqueror can as well, so if you use kde you should have no problems. You can also use konqueror outside kde. If you also install kate/kedit/kwrite, you can edit any remote file as if it were local. When saving or exiting you'll get an option to upload the modified file.

try 'dolphin', it's KDE's new file browser. It works well, allows opening and saving of remote files via ftp or sftp.

  1. "can't connect..." does not help us to diagnose what the problem is. Try to describe how are you actually trying to connect, and which problem/error do you get.
  2. yup, konqueror is a browser, it's a very convenient way to search remote files, just like mc. Then you use kate/kwrite to open them. Any other editor will not work, and maybe that's your problem.

I tend to believe that it is difficult to find software in linux that acts like software in windows. In linux some things are done differently, and most of the time there is a very good reason they are done that way.

I recommend you don' give up so soon, however. There is likely software that will accomplish what you want - it is just difficult to find if you don't know what to call it.

try this google link:

And "why should it" is my question. Hellicopters do not work like cars, thanks dog.

It's just the human nature. One person learns to do a task in a given way, then s/he measures every future situation by his/her own experience. We all do that to a greater or lesser degree

If a person knows how to do thing A using tool X, then that tool is "the best", it doesn't really matter anything else. We are always reticent to learn new things, we are lazy animals.

To disqualify one tool over another, first we need to have the same degree of ability with both, so we can make a fair judgment.

If the OP says konqueror+kate is not good software, he probably has not even tried (or only very superficially) to use them for more than five minutes.

In any case, if Windows works better for a given person, I see no reason to switch. It's a respectable option, as any other. Everyone should choose the tool s/he's more comfortable with. If he's back for Vista, then it's fine. Transitions are never easy.

Whatever your choice is, good luck.

As operation system, Ubuntu was much more stable for me… but there’s a big problem with the software part! first I couldn’t find flashfxp – I work with this software your years now, but I was sure there is better one for linux, until I didn’t found even one soft that can do editing + ftp things…

My “Russian” paypal Webmoney, didn’t work at all( and the list goes on and on…

I think this is the reason why people still using windows- No soft. And all this wine stuff just socks.

I hate vista!! Why I need to see stocking windows all the time? Why it’s so slowly? I have quad-core with 4 GB ram. What the biggest corporation in the world did in 5 years working on vista?
