i lost yahoomessenger!
hi...
i successfully installed yahoomessenger in my system(suse 10.1). but i can't find the application to run. i went to Run Application option too but couldn't locate it. please help me do this... |
Sorry, I just don't remember where suse installs that or under what name. I believe it should appear under the "internet - more programs" menu.
The linux version of yahoo messenger is way way out of date and doesn't do chat rooms which is why I haven't used it in a long time. You can do yahoo PMs with kopete. Gaim does yahoo PM and chat rooms Gyachi does yahoo PM and chat rooms too (the webcam function was great, but the last version has a broken driver at the moment) |
I think it would be better if you use Gaim rather than installing a messenger.
Just go to Internet>Chat>Gaim internet messenger, and then set it up to access your yahoo account by clicking on 'Accounts' and then selecting the 'Yahoo' protocol. I think it should be a better alternative to actually installing another messenger. |

GAIM is wonderful too but today after using Gyachi, I plan to use Gyachi instead. Thanks. |
Yes, webcam was fine in gyachi under suse 10.1, but in gyachi for suse 10.2, there is a plugin which fails to load, preventing (usualy) webcam use. If you want to keep the cam ability, don't upgrade to suse 10.2 until the people doing gyachi have fixed it.

I have also came across a couple to other threads on this forum which speaks about running a local proxy to make GAIM work. Also, at the GAIM's website, I found this info. http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#q67 |
Well, now, the question is: are you actually using a proxy server? If yes, then it seems like a problem with your proxy server itself. Or you can try to go to 'More Options' when you're setting up an account in Gaim, and see what settings are there. I think using the option 'Global Proxy settings' should do rather well, if you've opened up port tunnels for yourself through the proxy server for internet access.
If not, you'll have to use HTTP/SOCKS 4?SOCKS 5 proxy and specify your username and password as needed by your network. If that doesn't work, try signing in with 'No Proxy'. I'm pretty sure Gaim will work on any one of these. I've been using Suse and a DSL connection, and my Gaim works fine. ;-) Keep me updated. Cheers and good luck! |
