I know you know how to do this

Hey there, I have a GForce 4mx am running Ubuntu 5.04 and downloaded these drivers NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run when I double click them I get an error saying

Code:
gedit was not able to automatically detect the character coding. Please, check that you are not trying to open a binary file and try again selecting a character coding in the 'Open File...' (or 'Open Location') dialog
How do I get the driver installed?!

Have you dropped into a shell and tried running it from the command line?

Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run --check
That will do a checksum verification to make sure the download is ok, and:

Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
should start the install from the command line. The readme.txt that is on the Nvidia driver download webpage has all the info you need about installing and configuring the drivers with X.

I installed these drivers over the weekend (for a GeForce 440Go) and it worked fine.

You need to shutdown GDM first before doing the installation. You do this by doing "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" as root. Install the drivers and then do "/etc/init.d/gdm start" as root to start GDM after the drivers have been installed and you have configured xorg to use the new drivers. Make sure you have the kernel source, headers and gcc installed before attempting to install the nvidia drivers.
