I want to start over.

What are the linux commands for reformatting a hard drive?

simply remove all the partitions with the LiveCD installer - this will erase the harddisk (if a CD is not available, use the cfdisk command to do the same job :P)

Use programs like "GParted". Or if you install GNU on your HDD, normally there is a formatting step in the installation (in every distro as far as I know). Take a look at this.
