I have an alienware m15 laptop with a hd audio controller and there's no sound...

The sound card is onboard audio, 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller, module is snd-hda-intel. The device is ALC882. The sound card is detected but no sound plays at all. Under System-Administration-Sound Card Detection-settings the default audio card is selected to this onboard audio. Under System-Preferences-Hardware-Sound there are two devices under default mixer tracks, HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer) and Realtek ALC885 (OSS Mixer). I've tried all combinations and I can't get any sound to work. The speaker icon on the top right of the screen is enabled( no X on it). Also the laptop volume quick key works and the respective osd says the volume is on max. I've run out of ideas. Anybody else have this issue?

You may want to open up a mixer controller such as alsamixer and see if turning up other volume controls helps. Which distribution are you using? Fresh Drivers would mean installing an updated kernel, which might not be a good idea unless your kernel is considerably outdated; but depending on your distribution might not be a difficult thing to try.

Kernel version is 2.6.25.10-47.fc8

Also, youtube videos freeze after 2 secs of play. I think this along with the fact that no sound is coming out is related. I have no other programs running that would be using the sound.
