Is it good decision ? Any lost ?

I take it you're new to linux. Your question sounds like you'll get a flood of replies from people giving you their opinions on linux. It'll be interesting to see, because linux attracts a diverse crowd from die-hard console users or security folks to (more recently) desktop enthusiasts.

Personally, I highly recommend ubuntu as a intro distro. They take a lot of the work out of running linux. I think it's a great decision and got started in linux because the development environment feels more integrated. I don't get into IDEs very much because I only develop *small* projects. Therefore I'm plenty happy with Komodo Edit, which is free from activestate.

IMO you are getting ahead of yourself. Don't even worry about installing Linux right now. Since you haven't picked a distro you need to do that first.

With the advent of the Live CD/DVD picking a distro is fun and easy. A Live CD allows you to boot Linux without installing it at all. Linux will run fine on a modern computer straight from a CD or DVD with no hard drive space all.

Ubuntu is the most popular distro, it is easy to use and is well supported.

Kubuntu is Ubuntu with a KDE desktop environment instead of Gnome.

Mint is based on Ubuntu and has a multimedia focus.

Personally I think all the distros listed above are a bit slow, but they do work fine and are very popular.

Sabayon is Gentoo based and is my favorite full sized distro. Sabayon is easy to use and runs faster than the Ubuntu variants.

Puppy is my very favorite distro (using Puppy now). Puppy is very lite and fast. It can load completely to RAM so in addition to being super fast it also cuts down on drive access.

At ~96MB to download Puppy is a must see. Even if you decide on a bigger/slower distro Puppy is still worth looking at. You will be amazed at how good/complete a ~96MB distro can be.

All the distros listed above have some sort of Package Manager that makes it easy to install new programs or update existing ones. Puppy's is called PETget. Keep that in mind if you like a distro but it seem to be missing something. Chances are whatever is missing can be downloaded.

Live CDs are awesome!

They detect hardware on the fly and boot up in just a couple of minutes (Puppy and Accelerated Knoppix boot in a minute or less) using no hard drive space what so ever.

If you do not have enough RAM the CD will not be able to be removed because the OS still needs info from the disk. Your system will be sluggish if you are using a live CD in this way because optical drives are slower than hard drives.

If you have enough RAM some live CDs will copy completely to RAM so you can remove the CD and the system will still work. If the Live CD can be loaded completely to RAM the system will be very fast because RAM is faster than a hard drive.

Puppy Linux is small so it is easy to download and does not need a lot of RAM to work completely from RAM.

Puppy is not the only distro that will run in RAM but most other distros are larger so they will need more RAM.

Of course the Live CD thing is just to check Linux out. You can install to a hard drive once you pick a favorite.

To answer your question about the software, No your linux software will not be installed on the same folders as windows. What you will end up with is two partitions. One for you Linux and One for your Windows. But if you do install linux be carful as I have seen a couple of people new to linux just hit next on installs then complain that linux took all their drive space and deleted their windows partition.

I think the online installation guide for Ubuntu (32-bit) will answer all your questions. It's very comprehensive and describes all the ways that you can use Ubuntu with your PC. I used it earlier this year to guide my installation of Ubuntu in dual-boot configuration with windows XP, as you are trying to do now. Installing Ubuntu Linux is very easy as long you understand your options. And you can try Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution by running the installation CD in Live mode from inside Windows - this allows you to temporarily boot Linux unto the Ram to let you try it out. If you can run it in live mode, it will run smoothly on your PC in dual boot configuration. And yes, you can use your windows PC to create the installation CD from the ISO file available at the website. Here's the link:
