Oh I forgot: to exit fdisk, just enter a "q".

extraordinary good post! :)

(...) and I don't know if you understood what went on
... unfortunately too late: i saw there was no option which hdd to choose (there was, but not highlighted and so not clickable) and i didn't get it that the installation was about to format both c:\ and d:\ again - but i'll definitely have a try with your fdisk suggestion later!! at the moment i won't touch anything until the task i was talking about is done. the only system installed is linux lycoris, i used knoppix only from a boot-cd. but i learned: never install a completely new os after not having slept for ages...
knoppix showed c:\ as hda1 and d:\ as hda5 - thank you very much for your explanation! i bookmarked the newbie-site as well as your text and will post the result later. i am going to read faqs all day and night as soon as i get the time - there's an exam on 20th of octobre also but i am quite a nervous guy with my pc not working properly. so i guess i'll have a try fixing before and i am going to update the forum afterwards. (i almost feel a need to excuse for a lot of easy-to-answer-questions...)
at the moment i think i prefer fedora - it was described to me in about the same way you talked about debian... did you try it?

Here's a thread with some more suggestions on newbie literature if you don't like the other one:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=238735

Specifically, people were mentioning the "rute" book (pun on root).

Knoppix can be a life-saver, and is generally a handy tool. Und die Dokumentation ist verfügbar auf Deutsch!
Also geniess das Studium, vielleicht sehen wir uns später.
