I get blocked with an unsolvable error while executing a program with wine. the error in a dialog box saying :
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Program: C:\Program Files\Starmageddon\starmageddon.exe
abnormal program termination
There were also some error output in the console, but I made them disappear by replacing and/or adding the following native libraries in C:\windows\system32\ :
These files come from dll-files.com. I don't know which version of windows there are designed for. I tried to run the program with win2000 emulation, then win98 : same error
I didn't get any help so far, however, any piece of advice, even any simple clue showing me the way would be greatly appreciated !!!
just a question, by the way : I read that the "builtin" libraries were localized in a *.so.* linux library, so what are these dlls in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/ ?
Distribution: Mandriva mostly, vector 5.1, tried many.Suse gone from HD because bad Novell/Zinblows agreement

Download wine 0.99-16 or whatever is the latest,
this is the first port of call for your application.
Look also on winhq database if there is any tip for your application
I fetched the brand new 0.9-14 version
I re-installed wine and the program :
- The installation was successful.
- The program first didn't start because of bad support of CD protection, so I patched it to a newer version (it is a game), and put the adequate patched-for-no-cd file.
- So let's start now : the menu with screen resolution and details appears on the screen, I start the game and ...
no it didn't work.
same dialog box from Visual C++ runtime, and the following in the console :
err:quartz:GraphBuilder_AddSourceFilter Load (80070002)
err:dplayP_IF_InitializeConnection Unable to load service provider
(about winehq database)
I already looked on appdb.winehq.com, and enven in the transgaming database, the game isn't listed. It's an old space opera dating back to 2002, and made by the polish developer Lemon Interactive.
hmmm, I think I've found a clue :
while starting a new game, the program crashes as well, but I have been able to see a dialog box with this message, just before the wine virtual desktop has completely disappeared from the screen :
V4D Error
(Arial)
could not get widths of characters
There's no problem to find the win™dows fonts, but in which directory should I put them ?
You won't have much fun with wine, if it's a 3d-game.
Some work, but it's not recommended.
You could get the cvs version of cedega, and try it. Anyway, you will have a hard time setting it up. Unless you like the whole getting-things-to-run thing. I'd recommend to keep win games off your linux.
I got gtaIII and Max Payne to run, but they are very popular and well supported by cedega. (and still problematic)
> yuck, the sound lags...
I solved it somewhat by enabling sound emulation in winecfg

It's a game using zlib, ogg vorbis, opengl, and any free software. the only pb with it is that I cannot launch the full version because :
- of a cd protection issue
- of a MS Visual c++ issue
the demo works nearly flawless (except lagging)

Indeed, I prefer the whole getting-things-to-run thing. I tested cvscedega some days ago and I wasn't able even to install the program properly. neither was I able to run basic application which work fine with wine.

For sure, they'd work better.
Moreover, even native gaming such as ut is slow on my computer under linux.
