I don't know how to install plugins for Linox when using firefox

When I attempt to install plugins on Fire Fox such as Flash player or Java The program appears to download without any problems. The down load window opens, I hit the install button and nothing happens.

You probably want to install Java through your distributions package manager, ditto with flash

Welcome to lq
as a general rule it is good to include your distro in your profile so people can better help you.

Linux does not work like windows. It will take some learning.

Here are three links. The first link is the generic installation of flash player and should work on most every distro. However it is not necessarily the easiest way.

As ace of spades stated, it is easiest to use a package manager. Many distros have a package manager.
Try this link for ubuntu /debian

Finally, though I never used Gentoo, here is an additional tutorial.

hope this helps.

how do I know what distro I have?

Thanks for your responses. Where do I find the type of distribution I have? Or is this something I'll need to download. I have an ASUS eeepc 2g surf which came with Linux loaded on it.
