I don't know how to connect...
 

to a windows share from my linux box. I have Fedora 8 installed on my laptop and I don't know how to connect to windows shares on my office network.

You'll need something called SAMBA. What distro are you on? If we know that we can give you directions on how to get/use what you need.

I installed Samba... I have Fedora 8 and under the Places menu, I noticed a Connect to Server option and was able to choose the Windows share and connect without any other problems. I'm not sure if installing samba added this, or if I just missed it in the past.

I am able to do what I need, but I still don't know how to do it with Samba or from the terminal. I'm trying to learn Linux....I'm a windows admin and am trying to implement Linux in our network, at least at the server level.

Any advice on what I can do as a next step would be helpful.

You can access the windows share from linux without installing samba ( server package). becuase this is the work done by samba-client package.

You need to install samba package only if you need to access linux share from windows computer.

Yep, the samba added it. You already are working with samba, it's just that your file manager is handling the details. For getting work done now, this is probably fine. If you want to administrate with this, then you should ask yourself what level of gui-fication you're happy with. If you're happy to do things within a desktop environment, then creating a share is as simple as right-clicking, selecting "Share this" and going through a menu. This won't be terribly different from how you'd do it in windows, only maybe a bit easier. :-)

If you want to go hardcore and do it all on the CLI, then just start googling "samba tutorial".
