Everything is fine now. I downloaded a proper Red Hat rescue cd, and simply edited my passwd file with vi. The root account is back, and everything seems to be working right.

Glad to hear it. But I think you should patent your new way of securing systems. Better than pam! Better than selinux! Better than iptables!

Don't laugh. We all know that somewhere, there IS some idiot filling in the paperwork to do exactly this. It'll probably be an approved patent too. The way things are going these days...
