I cant run any programs from aterm!

I just got linux, and although I have a very experienced friend helping me, he is not home for a week. I just downloaded Bittorrent and a game, Enemy Territory. I cannot open either of these files from aterm. Does anyone have any ideas? I tried root and typing filename etc but it didnt work. Help Me Please!

What kind of file is it?

Self-executing archive files (usually ending in .run or .sh) can be run by giving their pathname (just "./" if you're in the same directory) before the filename.

Otherwise, you will have to specify which program to open the file with (Linux usually has several different programs that can open each file type). For an rpm file, for example, you would us "rpm --install filename.rpm"

Hope that helps,

chmod didn't work?
What did you type, and what happened/didn't happen?

The .exe file is almost certainly a Windows executable; Linux executables don't usually have .exe on the end of them. You may be able to open/run it using wine, but don't hold your breath.

In which directory is it installed? Let's say it's in /home/user/

1. cd to that directory
Code:
cd /home/user
2. run the file
Code:
./"enemy terrotory".run
Note the quotes: you will need these if you have a space in the filename.

You don't have to be root to install software so long as you install it under your home directory. Most installers will prompt you for a root password if they need one anyway; it's best not to run it as root unless you have to.
