Graphics: Card: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter bus-ID: 01:00.0
The dreaded SIS graphics card is what I am guessing is killing your Mint boot.
Code:
Memory: 141.9/978.1MB
1 gig of ram should be enough to run Mint.
Code:
clocked at 1799.426 MHz
Single core Pentium 4 should be OK for 32 bit mint also. I hope thor jumps in here because I am not proficient with Mint and SIS graphics.
When you boot the Mint disc. First use the integrity check option to make sure the disk burned OK since you say that the md5sum checked out OK.
Then if integrity is OK. Pick the Start in Compatability Mode in the boot menu.
That is the best I can think of for Mint. I have not been running Mint 14 64bit very long and I did not have a problem booting it on the hardware I installed it on. Posted this from
See, on this old IBM M41 Desktop. I don't run Desktop Enviorments (though I run E17 in Macpup). I prefer Window Managers (Fluxbox,Openbox,Icewm) instead. It is lighter on resources and I have practically the same specs as you as far as processor and ram goes.
The only big difference is the video chip. You use SIS. I use Nvidia NV6.
I have a win 7 laptop and the mint 64 loaded just fine on it. It's the 32 bit version that I am having trouble with and you just may be right on the video because that seems to be where the install stops. I get a lot of different screen flashes and it feels like it can't get beyond that. I like this MacPup. Is there a way to run it from the hard drive in a dual boot atmosphere? I'm getting the feel of a different system. I also have been trying to do some reading in between our posts back and forth. Thanks so very much for all your help. From here, I guess I just have to experiment. I have been trying to get the money together to build a new desktop machine but I'm just in the research stage as to which mobo/processor combo etc. I just love messing with this stuff.
Mint works just fine with SiS graphics: I've got the same system. But you need to start the installation disk in the failsafe or compatibility mode.
If the installer crashes (as it does on a few older computers) use the following commands in a terminal:
sudo apt-get remove ubiquity-slideshow-mint
sudo ubiquity
Ubiquity is the installer and it doesn't crash: it's slideshow that fails.
This shouldn't put you off Mint: just a couple of bugs inherited from Ubuntu. Once you've installed Mint, it works perfectly.

Thanks for chiming in. But you have opened a new can of ??????worms for me. I'm not sure of what or how you mean. I require some very explicit instructions to do all that you say. So far, all I have done is put the dvd in the drive and boot. From what you say, I'm not doing all the necessary steps. Please explain. Thanks again,
As far as dual booting Macpup. I quad boot this old IBM testbox with Semplice,Vector Linux 7 STD Gold, AntiX 13 Testing, and Macpup 529.
I don't use grub2 but legacy grub. Which is like speaking greek to you Ray.
Multibooting takes skill. Get Mint installed. Run it for some months. Then start a new thread about dual booting Puppy with Mint and grub2 at Murga Forums. One problem at a time is all I can handle.

When I asked about dual booting, I was referring to either booting into Windows or into whatever Linux o/s I might have. In this case MacPup. If I find something I like I want to have the option of using it in the easiest way. Having it loaded in ram means I have to redo the settings everytime I load it. Or am I wrong?
I may be getting confused but I don't recall seeing that upon bootup. I just get the message boot from cd.... I then just wait and it starts loading. Maybe I missed something but I don't remember any choices at bootup.
