xf86config should give you all settings, not just the mouse.
Are you sure, you did not miss something when using it?

If not; is it possible to put the old monitor back and choose a generic monitor using some other setup tool available in your distro?
E.g. in SuSe there is a 'vesa compatible monitor' option, which results in a moderate resolution and sync frequencies, which would fit (almost) all monitors.
Then you can put back the new monitor, which should work.

What distro are you running? And you waited all of 1 minute to "bump" your thread?

You should only have to manually edit your XF86Config (maybe XF86Config-4) file if xf86config isn't working correctly. Even then it probably won't be too bad.

Let us know the distro/version and maybe a bit about your hardware.

Cool
