Unhappy I can`t get my Speedtouch working

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post in the forum and someone recommended this site for help. I installed Mandrake 9 last night as a dual boot with Windows XP. MDK is on a seperate hard drive all to itself. As a total and utter newbie, I am stuck already.

I have a broadband connection with Freeserve, and am using the provided Alcatel (Squid) Speedtouch USB ADSL modem with it. In the setup for Mandrake, it asked me if I had a speedtouch connected, to which I said I did and it told me to download a driver pack from http://speedtouchdsl.com/dvrreg_lx.htm and to copy the mgmt.o file to /usr/share/speedtouch . That is all that it said to do which i have done, I then went back into Mandrake Control Centre and checked the connection, which asked me the same as i got in the set up and to get that file, but let me test the connection. When I run the wizard, it says it connects, but for only a few seconds and then disconnects. In the time that it says it`s connected, i try to open a browser such as Konqueror, and it just mulls around and doesn`t even load a page.

Searching around this forum, I`ve had a couple of ideas to try to sort the problem out.

Looking at changing the vpi and vci settings to UK spec (0.38), but don`t know how to do it. I looked in another post and it said to go to the following and change...
/usr/sbin/pppoa3 -vpi 0 -vci 38
this location doesn`t seem to exist, so is there a PPP connection already in place that i need to use??? If not, how do i set one up to work with my Speedtouch? And also, have I completely cocked it up and done everything wrong, if I have, can someone tell me how to do it right. Like I said, I`m a total Linux newbie and help every bit of the way. It`s a shame I have to go back onto windows to send this.

Thanks for your help in advance...

Still not working...

I`m almost there and this solution is the closest I have got to even getting my Speedtouch working. Looks like I have one more problem to get around.

I have compiled the relevant files and created the files startadsl and etc/ppp/peers/adsl. But when I try and startadsl, I get a message telling me that /usr/local/bin/modem_run is missing, I checked and it is, there isn`t a mention of this file in any other instruction I have read in the linux forums, can someone tell me where to find it, or how to obtain a copy?

All help is greatly appreciated!!!
