I can't login regular users in KDE on Mandrake 9.2

I messed something up royally last night. I was trying to give my regular user account rwx access to /etc, /usr, and a couple of other directories and I messed something up when I did. I'm not sure of the exact directories that I changed permissions on, but I know /etc and /usr were two of them. This morning when I booted into linux I can't log any users other than root into my computer. When I try to log in as a regular user KDE acts like its going to work but when it gets to the point of bringing up the background color, before the KDE splash screen, it brings up the bright red background that root has for a split second, then goes to a black screen for another second or two and finally brings me back to the login box.

This is KDE 3.1.3 on Mandrake 9.2 and other than my screw ups with the file permissions is a standard install of the download version.

I thik that once I get this fixed I'm gonna give up on making a 'power user' account and just learn to work with 'su', and doing all my installs as root.

Changing those permissions was a really bad idea. Change them back if you haven't already done so. /usr and /etc should be rwx for root and r-x for everyone else.
