I can't get my mouse to work

I have just installed linux slackware 10.0 (yesterday), and I am unable to get my mouse to operate in the graphical environment. I have tried to enter xf86config to try to fix these problems but it either says "-bash: xf86config: access denied" or "-bash: xf86config: command not found". I have also tried /dev/mouse and have been denied access. (they alternate when i have tried the commands in / and /usr. I don't have much experience (about 2 days worth) with linux so could help given be very detailed.

Were you trying to run xf86config as root or a regular user?

root or user

the first time I tried I was logged in as user, and was told the file doesn't exist, then i tried again as root wondering if that would change anything and was told "access denied"
