One more thing, in the readme file it said "compiled source code" before doing the "make" command. But how do I compile source code?

Good instructions for Linux sound are at ALSA

Please dont think I am moron. I tried that already. My sound chip is not supported by ALSA and I have to manually install the driver from Cmedia.

What is the brand and model of your sound card?

What is the CMedia chip model?

You may want to do make depend before make.

I have: Cmedia 9739A souns chip
the only offical driver is v0.41 which can be found at
http://www.cmedia.com.tw/download/e_UDA9738_linux.htm
I tried my best to follow instructions from the readme file
but something really kills me:

Step 3: Compiled source code
make
make install

how do I compile the source code? can anyone download the driver and take a look then give me some advice?

What they mean compile source by doing the following:
make
make install

Some LINUX distributions want you to do make depend before you run make, so the steps will be:
make depend
make
make install

You can try give the source code to the ALSA developers and hope they write a module (driver) for your sound device. In the mean time, you can use Redhat 7.3, debug the source code to work with your system, or buy a PCI sound card.

If you do not want to get a PCI sound card, you need to try editing Makefile to relate to your directory structure.
Change
SYSINCLUDE = /usr/src/linux-2.4/include
to
#SYSINCLUDE = /usr/src/linux-2.4/include
SYSINCLUDE = /usr/src/linux-$(TARGET_KERNEL)/include

The # will comment out the line. If it does not work, just comment the second SYSINCLUDE and uncomment the first SYSINCLUDE.

I think I only need to change some directory relation. But I need help.
