I'm in trouble

Ok moses, everything went sweet i think, i did the 'sys c:' it said 'System Transferred' now when i go to boot windows it comes up the the windows 98 Splash screen then to dos...now what do i do

and lynch it did work, i could boot PM, but i am not sure who to use its recover feauture, it does come with one doesn't it, because when all this started my windows partition changed id from fat32 LBA to Partition Magic Recovery, so there has to be a recovery feauture...i have changed it to fat32 LBA again though...

Ok, you can tell your boot loader to boot to the windows system on the
hard drive?
I'm guessing that there are still problems with the files on the disk. . .

It's WAYYYY past my bedtime, so post what info you can and I'll be on
in N hours, where N is larger than 6. . .

When you boot, do you get a LILO (or grub) prompt for a few seconds
before it boots into Linux? If so (LILO), you can hit the left <SHIFT>
button and it will give you a
boot:
prompt (or a red screen), and from there you should be able to choose
windows. IF you've got /etc/lilo.conf set up correctly. . .

My lilo.conf:

# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'

# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
delay = 50
# Normal VGA console
vga = normal

Don't forget to run
lilo
if you edit /etc/lilo.conf, otherwise you won't be able to boot.
Anyway, if that's working, you should be able to choose to boot into
windows. If that works, then cool. Let us know how the files look. I'm
still guessing that they'll look wrong. I think you may need to have the
XP fixboot utility as referenced in my previous posts. . .

Yeh ummm when i boot my computer the GUI LILO screen comes up with 'windows' on it, when i select windows and boot it, the windows 98 splash screen comes up then goes to dos...

This is a good thing. Now that you have DOS running, you should
have a
c:\
prompt
do this:

dir

Are all the filenames still funky? My guess is "yes".

the powerquest people on their site say that windows must go on the first physical harddrive of a system, but apparently can be preceded on that drive by linux as they give instructions for placing it so. they have dialup support(the 800# is $30/incident, but the 900# is $2.95/min with the first two minutes free-if you are together with your question to them, you might get off cheap, but you won't be able to do a try this and try that over the phone-a sympathetic tech guy might let you keep calling back with results, etc). in any case they have e-mail support for registered users which might work ,if you've got a serial#- the site has some info online, i think i'd have a look, although they talk alot about the rescue disks, which i don't think you have and i'm not sure a set from someone else will help(that might be a question you could get answered in under two minutes). all this may not help either, but i'm still pullin' for you. good luck.

I've had windows (98) on various different partitions besides the first one
and haven't had this problem. Also, his machine would boot to windows
correctly before he used Partition Magic to muck with the partitions and
their sizes, and as far as I understand, he didn't change their positions,
since that would require basically deleting and recreating partitions.
If he can get PM working on his newly bootable system, he may be able
to fix the problem, though I get the feeling there was no recovery backup
made, so it may still be difficult. The next step after this (IMHO) is to try
an XP boot loader fix. . .

I re-read this thread again and realized you did the original damage with PM Pro .Which has a recovery utility.The disks I sent were from the regular ver 7.The only things you can do with that version is use the Operations>Undelete utility to recover deleted partitions and you can also run PartInfo from disk 1.You can run PartInfo by putting the 1st disk in after you get the DOS prompt.You would type:
A:\ partinfo
Press enter.This will generate a report listing error numbers.Post back any if you want and I'll try to see what they mean.I have the explanations for most of the common errors.I'll keep checking back to see if I can help any further.I,too,am pulling for you

Well yes moses you are right, i did 'dir' and it printed all the mumbo jumbo stuff, and i read about that XP fix boot stuff somehwere whilst i was searching on google/linux....

and tincat i'm in Australia and my guess is that the calls would be more expensive...

and lynch yes i used partition magic PRO, thats why i couldn't find the recovery utility on the disks...i will do the 'partinfo' command after posting this....

p.s ANYONE WITH PM PRO DISKS PLEASE GET IN CONTACT WITH ME

If you find a winner, I'd be happy to open back up the ftp for the files to host on. Good Luck, and this sucks! You know by now you could have gone over to a buddies house, and tried making those disks like I described before

The evaluation of PM pro's boot disk don't really work, it just shows what it CAN do, but it doesn't do it...

and masterC problem is i don't have the cd's for PM, they were a friends who has gone to america for some competition and won't be back for a while....

I don't know, but it's worth a try, IF YOU'VE BACKED UP YOUR DATA!!!
(sorry, I've screwed myself too many times by not doing so that I have to
harp on it sometimes. . .)
I'm still pretty sure PM Pro is what will fix the problem.

Could you post the result (or a portion thereof) from:
ls -l /windows_mounted_partition

I'm just curious about the size of files, types of files, etc. . .
