It seems as though when you upgraded KDE it changed your runlevel. Take a peek into you /etc/inittabl file and make sure it says:

id:5:initdefault:

id:3:initdefault:

If it says 3 instead of 5 change it to five and type:

init 5

By the way it is startx not starx.

When you get to the text only command line, go ahead and put in your user name and password. Then, type

startx

NOT starx. This should get you into KDE or whatever your default X session loads up.
