I have a computer that had crashed. I'm interested in putting linux in my crashed computer. if it's crashed how do I place it on the pc? where do I download a linux version and what version should I get?

is it possible to download it to a cd and place it in the crashed computer and it would instal its self? sorta like windows xp cd does when your pc crashes.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

First, how did the system crash? What is the problem, hardware or software?

You could download a 'SystemRescueCD' to checkout the system. If it's just a software crash then you could download from the 'LiveCD List' to test a distribution before a install.

I prefer SlackwareŽ but it does require a little work on the user's part. The learning curve is steep but once you've got it you will use it. As some say ' To use SlackwareŽ is the way to learn Linux'.

These links and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

You can download a distribution installer, burn it to a CD, and install Linux from the CD. The Linux distribution which installs with the least amount of user participation is ubuntu or kubuntu. I recommend you try kubuntu:

Just download any of the linux iso and burn it to a CD.Installing linux is just like installing windows. There are a lot of lnux distributions available for free.Select the one that suits your needs(HOME/OFFICE/DEVELOPMENT/NETWORK).:)

That's how I messed up my windows... by updating and it crashed completely. This is why I gave up windows for linux. Now I'm starting to learn how to use ubuntu at the moment.
