I'm desperate...How can I get on the net with linux?

Hello people,
I'm so trying to get on the net with linux... Nothing seems to work in this respect. I have the internal Aztech SoftK56 Data Fax PCI modem on my system. It works well with WIN, which is indual boot with RH9, but nothing hapens in linux. Then I got an external PACE, Mobi Fax modem which although it is recognized by KUDZU it doeshn't seem to do nothing in linux. Now I have this US Robotics SPORTSTER,33.6 Faxmodem with the same problem.
I'm in absolute desperation.
Everytime I want to go online I need to start WIN, then go back and boot in linux to test the tips and advice I get on the forum then go again onWIN to be able to get on the net............................

Help p-please...
Thanks

First what are you using for your ppp connecting, it is a ppp connection right?
What error messages do you get with either KPPP or wvdial?
Have you checked the linux hardware and winmodem web pages to see if those modems will work under linux ,just because kudzu tells you what it is doesnt mean it will work.
Im sure one of those will work it might be a config thing.
The error messages will give a clue

All of those modems you listed are WINDOWS modems.
somtimes called Win-modems or Soft-modems.

a win/soft-modem isnt actually a full modem, and relies on a program that acts as the modems guts, very rarely does a softmodem company make linux drivers.

check to see if any of ur drivers have a HSF or HCF chip in them, if so, you are in luck.
http://linuxant.com provide drivers (free trials, and full for a cost)

OR... the easy option would be to buy a proper hardware modem, (almost all pci modems are win-modems) buy an external SERIAL port modem, they are guaranteed to work.
or get broadband cable modem

I've got 2 external, (hardware), serial modems. One is a PACE, Mobi Fax modem, and the other is a US Robotics SPORTSTER,33.6 Faxmodem. Both external. At the moment is the first one connected and when I try to connect to the net it seems that is working the mozille browser comes on and the basic page comes up but in reality it is not online and if I try to call a web site, a window pops up saying that it couldn't connect. There's no sounds on the phone nor those typical sounds on the modem.
Do I need to be connected to an ISP, like Freeserve or something like that?

so u HAVE external modems....
have you configured the connection yet ?

u know, the bit where u enter your ISP's phone number.
and enter your loggin username and password ?

and in linux, a little box doent pop up whenever u launch a browser like in windows.
you have to activate the connection.

usually with a graphical tool that comes with ur distro, or manually with /sbin/ifup

have a play with these commands...

redhat-config-network
redhat-control-network

and come back with more info on what the problem is, and what u have / have not yet tried.

quijibow when i get to the question of what ISP what shall I put? On the drop down list that comes down, Freeserve is actually one that I happen to have CDs at home but I've checked them up and there is no linux that I coul see. I don't know what to do.
Please help...
nightjar, I cannot open your connections, could you actually write down the whole thing, (web address or whatever)? Please.
Thanks guys

Oh yes,
In Control Center >connections , it seems to have recognized the modem:
It sais:

00.90.0 Comunication Controller:
Rockwell International HSF 56K Data/Fax/Voice Modem (rev 01)
Subsystem: Aztech System Ltd MSP3880-W
Flags:bus master, medium dersel,latency 64, IRQ5
Memory at dfff0000 (32 bit, non-prefetchable) SIZE=64K
I/O ports at c800 [size=8]
Capabilities <available only to root>

I hope some of you can take some information from here.
I'll be waiting
Thanks again

so you havent actually signed up for an internet connection yet ???

just ignore that, and put in the phone number of your isp ect ect ect.

Ahh, the hsf modem, thats your PCI modem right ?
that modem WILL work, but you will need to download the driver source code
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.stones/hsf.html

than you will need to install your kernel source code to compile it.

quite complicated.

if i were you, i would definatly use one of the serial modems !

Hei guys,
thats cool, thanks..
ASTROPICACHU IT'S ONLINE WITH LINUX.

I finally did it with all your help after 15 years 5 hours 3 minutes and 7 seconds. Not...

I've decided to change back to Mandrake and a few hours ago I put mandrake over RH9, everything is cool now. But as you can see I have anotther question:
How do I get some screensavers from RH discs to the Mandrake installation. And wallpaper as well.
Where do I put them, or where are they strored in the cds.
Does anyone knows?
Thanx a million
