Hybrid Networking

Greetings Fellow Geeks,
I am more than a NEWBIE to Linux, actually a total dunce. Started working at a school and they have given me 4 retired computers to prove my belief that Linux and Open Source software has great value to the educational system in Jamaica. So I have come up with teh following with no idea of how to achieve it. However with what I have heard about this community, I figure it will be a reality very quickly.

So the plan is the use 3 of the machines as workstations with Ubuntu Desktop and join them to the current Windows Domain (myschool.local). The 4th machine will be loaded with Ubuntu Server (32bit) and used for 3 specific purposes along side the Windows Domain controler (at least for now). The machine will only be used to run Fedena, Open Docman and to back up the files stored and used from the Windows Server each day. The machine will have 1 or 2GB RAM, Intel Pentium 4, 40GB (IDE) hard drive to hold OS an Software, 500GB (SATA) hard drive for the storage of the documents to be managed in Open Docman and if necessary the MySQL database for Fedena, 1TB (SATA) hard drive to be used to back up both the Windows Server files and the datavase and document storage from the 500.

All users must be ale to use what they are supposed to when they login to AD and only those selected would be able to access any software or resources from the Ubuntu Server.

Looking forward to hearing how to do the above as the first step to taking over the Jamaican educational system.

Hello, I think most folks use OpenLDAP or such. There was a free product on Distrowatch being advertised a month ago but I forgot it's name. Looked like a great way to integrate linux to an AD. Might even look at 2X.com for their products for ideas.
