Huge newbie with gaming on Linux, please help with frame rate UT problem

Hello I just put the original UT on my Gentoo box. Although I am estatic that I finally got it to work, I am a bit frusterated right now because it runs frame by frame. It's wildly slow and it's nearly impossible to play. How do I fix my frame rate? Any help would be great.

PS: I have UT2K4 - I would just rather have the original. Should I put on UT2K4, would this fix the problem? I would rather tough it out and resolve the problem though - plus I like the original more than the sequels.

Installing your ATI or Nvidia drivers would probably help. Just guessing.
