html usage on netwrok

Hi,

Is there a tool or way to find out how much http or ftp data is going through network?

Thanks.

FTP traffic is sometimes hard to isolate (because the tcp port numbers are dynamic), but ntop (www.ntop.org) should give you a good idea of how much traffic is http. You'll need to make sure your computer can see all of the traffic on your network -- that would involve a switch that can do port mirroring.

Thanks.

Do switches keep record of app traffic ? I don't think that is possible ?

Some high-end switches allow to gather stats; whether
that can be broken down to protocols I don't know. You
can always use a linux machine with iptables & ulog
rules as a router to get what you're after, though.

Cheers,
Tink

Some switches do, but I was suggesting that you configure your switch to forward all traffic to a machine that was running ntop. Then ntop will give you a breakdown of the traffic.
