HP Printer Issues on RHEL 5.4

Not sure to put this in software or hardware so posting in this forum.

CentOS 5.3 and none of the HP drivers that comes with it will work with my printer HP officejet J4580 All-in-one connected via USB.

My printer is listed in a later hplip, a self extracting file hplip-3.10.2.

Instructions for install are here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...all/index.html -- NO LONGER UP , using sourceforge

Using HP Driver 3.10.9 but get this error message during the install:

INSTALL MISSING REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES
-------------------------------------
warning: There are 7 missing REQUIRED dependencies.
note: Installation of dependencies requires an active internet connection.
warning: Missing REQUIRED dependency: gcc (gcc - GNU Project C and C++ Compiler)
warning: This installer cannot install 'gcc' for your distro/OS and/or version.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency. Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.

I cannot connect my comnputers to the internet so I have to download all my packages and burn to a CD -- VERY TIME CONSUMING. I tried installing gcc and it needed dependencies so I went and downloaded those dependencies but they needed other dependencies.

When I re-ran the installer it gave me exact the same error message.

I found some dependencies from searching on my Red Hat Account but am being thrown into a big loop of "can't install this rpm packages because it needs this dependency." I download, burn and try to install the dependency needed for the previous package but now I need another dependency for the dependecny that needed the dependency -- GRR -- get the picture.

I did have a problem with my RHEL 5.5 and the 3.10.9 .run file.

Should I drop back a couple HP x.x.x .run files?

As evident from dependency issues it is advisable to take that route. Some later drivers require upgraded versions of dependencies which if are not met can fail.

Have you tried it now?

I'm buring them to disk now and will let you know. I went back to the 11/09 <3.9.10> and 12/09 <3.9.12>. Since Red Hat 5.4 was released back in 09/09. I figured that would be a good place to start.

There is no Officejet J4580 listed at the Open Printing database.

There are other Officejet J model printers. You might try checking them out at Open Printing.
