Well, it's been a few days and no response, so my advice probably can't hurt

Have you considered using cups? It may seem like overkill for a local printer, but I feel it's a great tool and VERY easy to setup/use. And even better is that's it's easily expandable when you add more computers to your network should the need/desire ever arise.

I didn't notice your first reply.
I installed cups; but there was still no printing; and lpstat gave no output.
I reinstalled lprng.
