Howto disable Login screen GNOME

I have tried it all now.

- RedHat->System Settings -> Login screen
- Autologin = yes / autologinuser = root
- does not work
- leaves me at the login prompt
- if i say autologin user = some_other_user it works

- tried to make root pass blank
- vi /etc/passwd
- edit first line to root::0:0... <- got rid of the 'x'
- now i can type 'root' at the prompt and hit enter and it logs me in
- but i want to auto login as root

- modified file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc with following lines
- autologin = yes
- autologin user = root
- still doenst work

has anyone ever been able to auto login as root to their system? if so how?
another alternative is to disable the login screen alltogether.. any ideas how to do that?

excuse me for answering with a question, but why do you want to do this? it seems a bit unsafe if you ask me.

i don't know if there is a way to do this. this:
- if i say autologin user = some_other_user it works
leads me to believe that there is no way. however, there is a huge chance that i could be totally wrong and have only succeeded in making a fool of myself.
