How to work on embedded linux

I'll be working on embedded linux project and i have no idea how does it work. Please help me to understand how it works... thanks!

Can embedded linux run on PC without using any other OS and develop applications on top of it?

If you already know "standard" linux, know how to compile a program,

otherwise get a linux distro and learn the basics, something like slackware will help a lot and is a good development environment.
