How to use Linux to connect to broadband?
 

Hello, i am a newbie. I use Fedora core 4.
I am in malaysia, my broadband service is called Streamyx, to log in in windows, i need a ADSL modem, using ethernet interface.
The login id is : sjmok@streamyx
passwordL: gen777
How to do this in linux?

lol..i wouldn't put ur login name and password on the internet.

If it uses a web interface, you should be able to access in in linux. How do you normally access your login?

the broadband service recognise my tel line, even you know my ID and Password, you can't use it! :D
In windows, i use connection wizard to setup a broadband connection, just key in my ID and psw, then it will log in.
So, in Fedora, how can i do it?

The ADSL modem is connected to phone line, and another end to my Laptop thru LAN cable. I may use also USB cable.

Is your laptop a duel boot Linux/Windows machine... Either way I would suggest getting a router... That is what I use to connect several Windows and Linux machines using a Cable connection... I have used DSL as well and in principal is the same...

I'm asking, in linux, how to setup my broadband connection?

One way is to open up a terminal (if you are using a gui) and type "setup" <enter> (without the " ")

This will bring up a setup page.

from there hit the down arrow key to "Network Configuration" <enter> (to run tool)

if you setup your connection through Ethernet then choose "Ethernet" <enter>

from there your on your own. If it is anything like cable it shouldn't be that hard. However, i have never used DSL so i could be wrong.

It sounds like you're using pppoe (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) to connect to your ISP with Windows, so you should be able to do the same with Linux. I know very little about Fedora, but if it has the rp-pppoe package available you should be able to set it up quite easily.

As I recall - and bear in mind I used it with Slackware, so it may differ slightly in Fedora - all I had to do was type "adsl-setup" in a root terminal and follow the prompts. Once set up, the command was "adsl-start" to connect and "adsl-stop" to disconnect.

As kencaz said, much easier to buy a router, but it certainly worked well enough for me.

have you gone to your ISP website and looked there, if they have a search field type in the word linux and then look for words like connection. ISP's will sometimes have a illustrated manual on how to set up broadband on linux os on their webpage

I don't think kppp handles PPPoE, but I'm not really sure. I've used rp-pppoe to connect to both Verizon and SBC DSL here in the US and it works well. You can probably also use the built-in ppp program (this is what I use on my OpenBSD gateway), but its configuration is a bit trickier. In cany case, Google can tell you more about rp-pppoe and pppoe on Linux in general.
