How to upgrade postfix 2.3.x.x to 2.9.x.x in CentOS 5.8
 

Hello everyone,

Can anyone please tell me how to upgrade postfix to the latest version in Centos?

Do we have a command for doing that or do we need to do that manually,if so how should we proceed?

I didn't get any good and clear documents so...

10 seconds on google shows non-official rpms, but nothing from centos - http://packages.oostergo.net/postfix-2.9/el5/

But that isn't my doubt.My doubt is how should i proceed in upgrading the postfix?

you are using CentOS 5.8 for a reason
you NEED it for some OLD software

install CentOS 6.2 , that version will be a bit newer
postfix-2.6.6-2.2.el6_1.i686.rpm

the version of postfix in 5 was LOCKED at that version when centos 5.0 came out ( years ago)
and will NEVER change

but for 2.9.??
do a very custom build of it on 5.8
you might need to build ALL of the dependencies ( out of the system)
do not mix versions of programs

if you MUST use the newest of the new the 2.9.???
install fedora 16 ( or the ALPHA testing "rawhide" fedora 17) ,or Arch

do you even need to do anything? I wouldn't expect the config files to have any problem loading. myself.

But how can it load itself because we need to upgrade it manually isn't it?

I provided you a link to some RPMs for EL5 which should work. others are available too if you google around, i think i saw some on the russian centalt repo. these are not *official* rpms but should work fine. you are welcome to upgrade from source if you wish, nothing stopping you but unless you are aware of a specific reason to do it, why would you?

i only wanted to keep it to the latest one thats it...no other reason..

well that is no reason to do any form of upgrade. if you are not after specific functionality, then you should stick with the official packages, which are much more likely to have had any bugs or security issues fixed in them by the commercial vendors.

well postfix is the MTA used out here...

And the latest version has reached around 2.9.x.x and we are way behind. It isn't updated to the latest one that's why wanted to upgrade it myself by downloading the rpm from the source..

No, that's not the way it works. if you have no knowledge of needing to upgrade, it is pointless, and will leave you with a probably less secure / reliable system. Redhat continue to make security updates to the older software long after it's officially replaced by newer versions of code from the original postfix developers.

the reason you are using CentOS5 is that over the lifetime the VERSIONS of software DO NOT CHANGE over the 5 to 7 YEARS of support
if that is NOT the reason then do not use RHEL/CentOS/SL

bug fixes and SECURITY patches are backported to the versions of software that are installed
