How to upgrade Gnome 2.4 to 2.6 with Slackware 9.1
Can any of you Linux experts out there tell me how to upgrade Gnome 2.4 to 2.6 with Slackware 9.1 distribution.
I am new to Linux so if you respond, please post your comments from that perspective. Thanks:newbie: |
I'm quite a newbie too, but here's how I'd do it (and have done):
Run terminal. Become root. Run "pkgtool", choose to remove *some* packages. See what packages you want to upgrade from some slackware ftp directory. Example: ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slac...ackware/gnome/ Let's suggest that you decide to upgrade every package listed in that directory. Upgrading means just uninstalling the pkgs, then downloading the new ones to e.g. /tmp directory, and running "./install-packages". To download, use wget ("wget ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slac...ckware/gnome/*" - downloads everything from specified location to the current directory). Hope this makes sense. Bamse |

Good luck, be sure to post here if problems occur.

I suppose I should remove Gnome 2.4 before I install 2.6. I did that, when I startx, Gnome 2.6 startup screen appears, but Nautilus does not load all the usual services, when I try to select something all I get is my mouse cursor.
Reload, try again? |
I went ahead and reload Slackware, I intalled the entire package, before I did that I unistalled all the old packages. Now when I startx, Slackware says gnome-session:relocation error: /usr/lib/libgnomecanvas-2.so.0: undefinde symbot: gdk_threads_lock.
Waiting for X server to shut down. Nothing ever goes as plan. |
