How to update mplayer's package?

Hi,

I installed the mplayer on ubuntu 7.10, it's works fine. Now, I upgrade to ubuntu 8.04 and cannot playback some avi, rmvb files. So, I want to update mplayer and w32codes on ubuntu 8.04, how to do this?

Best bet would be to uninstall the existing packages and re-install them, there may be different packages designed to work differently in 8.04 so try that out. If that fails you can manually download the win32 codecs from mplayer's website and extract them to /usr/lib/win32 yourself.

I suppose it is possible that mplayer was not upgraded when you upgraded to 8.04. Try opening synaptic package manager, enable the universe and multiverse repositories, reload synaptic, and search for mplayer and reinstall it. Then install (or reinstall) the ubuntu-restricted-extras package that has most of the codecs. Also go to medibuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu and add that to your repositories as per the how-to. Then reload syanptic and install the w32 codecs. You can also get libdvdread and libdvdcss with medibuntu for playing DVDs.
If you use the mplayer plugin for firefox then update that as well.

Hi, tommcd,

Thank you for your help. It's works now.

On the other hand, I want to say 'thank you' for dudeman41465's help.
