how to update ati raedon 1200 series for dream linux


im am using a dell inspiron 1721 with an ati raedon 1200 series video card i need to know how to update it so that i can get compiz to work properly. (it worked for ubuntu).Any sugestions?

Any modern distribution should provide 3D acceleration for that GPU out of the box. What makes you think you need to update it? What's the output of 'glxinfo'?

have you tried the linux drivers from the ati site?

You will need your kernel headers and some compile tools for it but its relatively painless.

Sorry I just saw your gpu. I'm not sure if its supported with the ati drivers. Needs to be checked.

That's a bad suggestion. The last proprietary driver for that GPU will not work on any recent distribution (any distro newer than ~2 years) and could make things worse.
