How to treat *.tar.gz files

I am sure that the answer to my question must be buried somewhere in man or info pages or online, disguised in telegraphic sentence fragments, but I have not been able to find it in a half-day search.

I want to install (in SUSE 9.3) certain applications that are available only as sources archived in tar.gz or tgz files. After I extract from the archive ... then what? How must I compile and install the apps? Their home pages give no clue.

You should look into the extracted archives...you might have README and INSTALL files. Refer those files for detailed instructions on installing.
