how to tell if my install is blocking a java URLConnection

Hi all. I have a question that is probably way newbie... I setup RH 7.3 with the guidance of some security guides. My server is up and running fine, with Apache serving web pages on it no problem.

I am trying to write a java program that connects to my URL and sends some data to it. It seems that I can make connections and open communication streams between my server and any other website, but when I try to connect to my website my program hangs....

I'm trying to determine if there is something on my server that might be blocking this communication?

Thanks.
