Several simple options:

Copy things

cp -R /this/folder /media/extdisk/some/folder
Or, use Rsync and put that into a cron job...

Good luck

What do you want to backup?
The entire disk, only some files?
Do you want to clone the disk?

Kind regards

install rsync,
mount your external disk on /media/backup (or whereever you want),

use a command sort of like this:

rsync -av /home/kri /media/backup
