How to switch keyboard layout in virtual console in Ubuntu 8.04?

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi,
I want to switch to a german keyboard layout on a virtual console. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.

The posts in LQ I've seen so far refer to /usr/share/keymaps to pick up the right layout, but in Ubuntu this directory is empty.

So how can I do it in Ubuntu?

Install the packages console-data and console-common, these packages include the keymaps found in that directory.
